Moving onward I might live in some underserved, anti-erotica backwater of the U.S.A., but there are stores here. This week, I got an E-Mail from a cheap grocery store called Aldi® which pointed out this new computer being a Special Value in its stores. I might have mentioned that the computer I am using now is very old. It runs Windows® 98 first edition. It was on the far edge of the technology arc when bought. But in the succeeding years, especially with the burgeoning of broadband connectivity, it fell behind. Some of my favorite World-Wide Web sites four years ago no longer support this. (So I am not there anymore.) This Medion® computer seems impressive. Especially for somebody like me who has a lot of entertainment content on videocassette and DVD. Look at that price also. I read that in some markets [Supposedly, wherever there is a Fry's® or a MicroCenter®.], the price is cut to $399. So on Monday, I went out and bought this computer. It is currently sitting in an unopened box in another room here. I am not going to try to connect and boot it up until after I return from Cinema Wasteland (this weekend), and the Great American Beer Festival the weekend following. At some future point, this Medion computer should gain a broadband connection. But once I hook it up, I am going to begin testing converting VHS videocassettes to DVD-RW. (Nero 8 is pre-installed on it.)
And a key aspect for somebody like me who strives to preserve my privacy and anonymity: It has to be bought with cash. And, there is no computer store clerk asking you for your name and Zip Code at the checkout.
The computer area here will have to be adjusted. This old computer is the horizontal AT case. The Medion is a tower. I am going to reuse my 19-inch monitor, black-and-white laser printer, and I hope to put this computer's "C:" hard drive in as a supplemental drive [The "F:" drive.]
The only thing about which I worry is that I haven't seen any indication that the Medion has a modem. In which case, I would have to try to reuse this one. I do not know how many open slots there are on the inside of the Medion.
Wish me success.
